    Hi guys,
Found your website just the other day whilst trying to find out a little more about Abernant Tunnel. Yesturday I paid a visit to the Eastern portal. Went on the mountain bike so didnt enter, but I was really impressed. Impressed enough to cycle across the top of the mountain to visit Cefn Glas tunnel aswell. So thanks for providing the details to find both.

Anyway, back to the point of this topic, is there a reason why most of the tunnels around this area closed in the 60's (or more to the point 1964)

    Cheers

Hi mate, welcome to the forum.

Yep, a lot of train lines and their tunnels were closed due to the Beeching reforms around 1960, when basically a the government appointed Dr. Richard Beeching to come up with a way to drastically cut the cost of running the nations rail network, and he did so by closing most of it.

Wikipedia has an in-depth article here:

Other tunnels around this time were not only closed for this reason, but also due to the dwindling wealth of the local industries making the cost of maintenance and repairs prohibitive.

Glad you liked the tunnels, and the website.

    Spar
