Just wondering really why so many of these tunnels were not filled permanently.
you never see any old mine shafts left open or just fenced off.
is it something to do with maybe the old tunnels being classed as listed building?Posted 1 year ago # -
There's one small difference between a mine shaft and a tunnel.
Mine shafts are vertical
Tunnels are horizontalIf you fall down a mine shaft there's no chance that you will survive the fall.
In a tunnel you might trip over something in the dark.Simples!

I but you see that's not entirely true a lot of mines are what known as drift mines they go down hill at a slight angle.
what your thinking of is deep mines like the type you see with the large tower and winding wheels.Posted 1 year ago # -
Yep mines are dangerous full stop really, deepmines have the added danger of sheer drops but drifts have dangers as well, poisonous/explosive gases, collapses, floods, low oxygen etc. I know of no uncapped mine shafts but there are still a lot of levels where you can just walk or wriggle in. Blimey such a long time since i was on here and this subject is causing a stir. Plenty of questions about how we got down it,last summer....well we were very lucky on two counts...1 - we just decided to nip across and take a pic of the Cement block cap,between walking others around the area. As we got there the landowner was happy for us to have a look,and thinking we would never get in,he drove off somewhere. He told us a new lid had just been put on.And 2 - we had some area Staff keys and the first one tried got the padlocks off in 5 seconds ! We left a mate above to keep an eye on the hatch cover as we did a quick recce.The wooden boards,half way down the shaft looked secure,but were not and before long we were all crawling through the drain and we were in ! After a quick check it was decided to fetch some gear for saftey reasons and later that evening,2 of our party went all the way to the other end and back with out problems. Im pretty sure we were the 1st in there for quiet a while,and heard rumours,afterwards,that Combi locks had been installed. Although the land owner gave 2 of our party,a bit of grief,as they popped back out later at night,he was ok upon realising the locks were put back on,without damage,buti would guess it was him who got on the phone to report somebody had got in,hence the stepped up security.I now have the key that got
us in,but now they are rendered useless. This bloke on this forum who says he cracked the combi locks & got in should post some photos as i would like to see the water levels,as there was hardly a trickle flowing out the storm drain,down into the nearby stream.Looking back it was great to have got in,wish i could do it all again,even though i got pretty cut up elbows from the crawl !Posted 11 months ago # -
Last time I walked passed with the dog it was down to one damaged combination lock. (4 or 6 weeks ago)

went there 2 days ago, there are 2 new combi locks on the hatch now

The drainage sewer is the only real way in now and I wouldn't go back up there again if my life depended on it.
Do the new combi locks have a key slot that will over ride the combination (if you forget the combination, lock can still be opened) ? If they do, it should be possible to get a jump key for them.
If they don't, its not really worth the hassle of trying to jump them.
