A train tunnel in Pontardawe to be exact.

But not any old train tunnel but one that appears to have been built but the line never opened due to a little skirmish in Europe called World War 1.

Now, there is definatly something there as the OS street view map shows it. It also happens to be on BRBR's Burdensome Estates database. I can only find one reference to it on Google and even that is just a rumour.

But wouldn't it be epic to get into this one seeing as it would appear to have been forgotten about by just about everyone !?!?!?

Hello
In the early 1980's I remember seeing a wrecked steamroller (not sure of the exact location) and was wondering what the story behind it is. Any information and photos would be appreciated.
Thanks

Remembering from my school days, anyone visited here? The tunnel is situated at the back end of an old disused tin works/factory just across the river from Rhydfelin. Access is gained via Rhydfelin or Meadow Street in Treforest.

Here's an archive shot as ive never been down there with a camera, and a google earth view to give some perspective.

Alrite you lot
Got an outing coming up this weekend, to Penallta colliery near Hengoed. We did a reccy trip this weekend just gone, no security on site and the nearest buildings are a school and some unfinished homes so it should be quiet at the weekend. I'll get a few high-vis vests together; they work wonders to reassure suspicious residents. Here's a pic to wet your appetites:

We were unable to find a way in however... hoping for more luck this time around. Anyone interested?

This is a large tunnel with walk in access from both sides, cant see any dangerous collapses etc, all very sound brick work. Have used this tunnel for many years walking through without the lights on so extremely safe. The western entrance has had a small land slide outside so waders will be required due to a small puddle. The eastern entrance can be entered by walking along the trees that have been placed along the side wall. The grid reference is 057 171 (Eastern Entrance) West Beacons map, 051 170 (Western Entrance)

This site has been closed a while now, reasonably vast site, used to go here quite regularly when it was open (no i wasnt a pupil), so im sure it would make an interesting explore. Access seems easy enough i had to drive past a few days ago.

Anyone done it?

i was walking the brynmawr to govilon line today, 8th october , and as i looked back at the abergavenny end portals,of the gelli felen tunnels, i noticed another tunnel mouth to the right of the rail tunnels, and much lower down with what appeared to be a footpath leading up to it. it,s a proper stone built portal, can anyone give any info on this?

Here's something that has been bugging me for a while, I notice that the land directly above the course of tunnels is often empty, when the land all around is planted with trees (leaving a clear strip through the forest marking the course of the tunnel). I've always guessed that this is something to do with land ownership; the rail companies owning the land vertically above the tunnels and the tree-people not having the right to plant on it... anyone got any other theories, or know the reason?

Sparhawk on "Images can now be posted on the forum"

Hi all
I have just updated the capabilities of the forum so images can be displayed in posts (thanks to Owain1982 for the suggestion):

The image will need to be hosted somewhere else first however (for example http://imageshack.us/ will host your images for free).

Then, the correct html code will need to be put in your post, which is this:

<img src="THE ADDRESS OF YOUR IMAGE GOES HERE" />

Remember to leave the space after the last quote mark. Also, maximum width for images is 450 pixels any more than this and the whole forum will explode.

Keep on exploring
