I've just found your report on the Pecaedrain tunnel. You did a follow up visit to explore the possible mine off the tunnel and did not give a definite answer to the reason for the mine. May I suggest it could be linked to the silica mines in the area.

In all the interesting places you have explored in this area, are there any that seemed to have a strange atmosphere? Anything strange or apparently inexplicable happen? Any supposedly haunted locations that you feel live up to their reputation? I would be most interested in any responses, thanks.

Here's something that has been bugging me for a while, I notice that the land directly above the course of tunnels is often empty, when the land all around is planted with trees (leaving a clear strip through the forest marking the course of the tunnel). I've always guessed that this is something to do with land ownership; the rail companies owning the land vertically above the tunnels and the tree-people not having the right to plant on it... anyone got any other theories, or know the reason?

Hi guys,

It's been a long time since my last visit to these forums....But with all this lovely weather I have the opportunity to go visit some of the local tunnels. Yesterday we went to Morlais Tunnel, MT, it was great, got some lovely pictures.

Soon a group of us are planning on visiting Abernant Tunnel but I have a concern regarding gases there. Can anyone provide an insight as to whether i need be concerned?

Cheers

hi all been living in ebbw vale for about 8 years now. originally from seven sisters down near neath.

driven through a couple of the tunnels you have shown while out trail riding.
mates seem to think im bit of an odd ball.
just find it quite interesting when you think of the history behind these tunnels and the work that must have been involved in building them.
seems such a shame now that they have been just to fall into ruin.
would really be interested to get out and explore some of these if this forums still active?

Hi im Jay from Blaina(Abertillery).
Im originally from Porth in the Rhondda but joined the Army in 92 and then after leaving the army lived in such places as....Pontypridd,Swansea,Fuerteventura(Canary Islands),East Yorkshire and now in Blaenau Gwent. Have been here a year now and have started exploring my surroundings slowly and am planning a day out exploring Clydach Gorge tomorrow which led me to this Forum. Its only 2 miles from me so not far to travel so i hope i have a great day out.
Im pretty new to all this and when i go out exploring its pretty boring sometimes because im on my own. I take a video cam and always post stuff on my Youtube Channel so hopefully tomorrow i can get some great clips lol. Anyway sorry to blabber on lol. If anybody's interested my here's a link to my latest vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-wfqBkr6WU

Hi guys,
Found your website just the other day whilst trying to find out a little more about Abernant Tunnel. Yesturday I paid a visit to the Eastern portal. Went on the mountain bike so didnt enter, but I was really impressed. Impressed enough to cycle across the top of the mountain to visit Cefn Glas tunnel aswell. So thanks for providing the details to find both.

Anyway, back to the point of this topic, is there a reason why most of the tunnels around this area closed in the 60's (or more to the point 1964)

Cheers
Lloydy

Hello!
Thought I would pop in and say hello.
A little bit about me. I'm a grumpy old git. I like tunnels. My Cannon slr doesn't but I've got around the 'I'm not going to focus no matter how hard you try to make me' problem. Got a web site at http://www.ratsandwich.co.uk if any one is interested. Still haven't got around to looking into those old mine workings at Taffs Well. I will one day when I'm actually working near home. There's lot's of things I want to do near home (Pontypridd) but my boss won't let me - keeps making me work in silly parts of the UK. This week I'm at Sizewell B nuclear power station (sorry, no pics - don't fancy ending up on the dole or locked up) and looks like next week it's the Isle of Wight with maybe scotland after that :-/

Oh well, that's enough meaningless waffle.

BTW, not keen on this forum software :-(
