Ah Pencader, one of my niggling obsessions. Much of the info on its Wikipedia page was sourced from files I found in the county library. I’ve only walked through it once, though I’ve been down to the southern portal many times – I remember before BRB put the fencing in, when it was just a breezeblock wall, though that visit was somewhat traumatic – I was very young and sank up to my knees in the mud.

The Llandysul Paddlers used to abseil down the northern escape-shaft until a grate was put in to deter them (I wonder what they made of the ’shaft caverns’), and my brother and sister were led through it once at night as part of an adventure experience – apparently the year before the organises sent someone on ahead with a torch and ‘Scream’ mask with instructions to jump out of one of the recesses to give the kids a scare.

It’s somewhat sad that you could not find the fabled escape-shaft. A recent update to Forgotten Relics has confirmed its existance, but does not say where it enters into the tunnel (aside from the vague reference to it being in the vicinity of the northern ventilation shaft).

Thanks for this update on Pencader’s condition, and the fascinating information on the shaft profiles.

    Hello there,

I’ve been exploring disused railway tunnels for the last 15 years or so and have walked and explored around 75. The presentaion and beautifully drawn maps are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Your photos are perfect and of extremely good quality. It was a pleasure to view and browse your exploration pages. Long may they continue!

My kind regards and best wishes from
