I’ve compiled a list of tunnels that need to be explored. This is, of course, in addition to the huge list of mountains that need to be climbed; the weather’s not the best for this at the moment though, and I’ve got a cold. Please inform me of any other tunnels in the south Wales valleys area that I’ve omitted from this list, e-mail address is in the info and contact section, and also contact me if you’d like any further information on any of these tunnels in the meantime!
Talyllyn tunnel, Talyllyn
Wenvoe tunnel, Culverhouse Cross
Garth tunnel, Ffynnon Taf
Rhymney tram tunnel, Rhymney
Rhymney river tunnel, Llechryd
Abertridwr tunnel at top rock (reportedly there, I’ve yet to confirm its existence)
Clydach tunnels, Clydach gorge
Gellifelen tunnels, Clydach gorge,
Gyfylchi tunnel, Afan valley
Maesteg tunnel, Maesteg
Gelli tunnel, Cymer (Only tiny)
Cymer tunnel (Gwdihw), Cymer
Rhondda Tunnel, Blaenrhondda (This is the big one. The end-of-level-boss of tunnels)
That’s twelve tunnels, but I seem to be finding more every day. With the help of the followers of this website, perhaps I can create an exhaustive list of all the tunnels to be found in and around the valleys…
There is (or was) a tunnel in Tonyrefail. It’s the old drift behind Coedely Club and may have been compleatly covered during the new housing development.
Far more interesting is the tunnel that connects two farms in the valley, it was apperently a priest bolt hole in the middle ages, and its entrance still existed 30 years ago.
There was also mine tunnel between Penrhiwfer and Gilfach Goch used by “young lovers” to cut the distance by more than half.
I would more than happy to help, feel free to email me and we can sort out phone details if it would help.
